Statistics and Further Mathematics

Statistics

Gad’s Hill School offers GCSE Statistics to pupils in Upper 4 and Lower 5 as a 2 year option. This qualification opens pupils eyes to some technical real-world skills of data collection, data representation and statistical analysis with emphasis on relating conclusions to the hypothesis being investigated. Pupils study for an hour a week and sit 2 written examinations. It is primarily for students interested in Maths, keen to study it with a different lens, and with a good eye for problem solving and of understanding how the world works. It is also invaluable for pupils considering studying A Level Maths.

Learning concepts such as Standard deviation, the Normal distribution, moving averages and further probability gains them a wide skill set. Statistics offers good transferable skills with other subjects like Psychology and Biology and the social sciences and can help open doors to careers in finance or business, and data science or medical research. Expectations of pupils are high and for them to stive for the best and the exam results gained match this expectation.

Further Mathematics

Gad’s Hill School offers the additional qualification of Level 2 Further Mathematics during their Upper 5th year. It is a course designed for high-achieving Mathematical learners working at GCSE grades 7–9. This qualification goes beyond the standard GCSE, offering a valuable bridge to A-Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, and those who will ultimately study Maths at degree level.

The pupils study algebraic reasoning, improve their mathematical fluency, and build confidence with more advanced ideas. The topics they are studying, such as extended algebra, functions, vectors and introductory calculus, gives them a real head start for post-16 STEM subjects.

Students fully appreciate that that studying Further Mathematics alongside their GCSE Maths course reinforces and deepens their GCSE understanding, improves their problem-solving and resilience and boosts performance in higher-tier GCSE content. Most pupils recognise that many GCSE topics become significantly easier thanks to the extra challenge and practice.

This qualification gives students a strong foundation for Year 12. Most of the students who have taken to study Further Maths will enter their A-Level courses more confident as they will be more familiar with key concepts, and ready for the increased pace of Advanced Mathematics. The course requires ambition, academic strength, commitment and willingness for extra knowledge,  and pupils are rightly proud of the results they achieve.
