Art is a popular and highly successful area of study at Gad’s. The department has clear objectives for each stage of a pupil’s development and encourages a very personal response from all students; building on their creative, intellectual and artistic abilities; enhancing personal knowledge and understanding; and developing skills including investigating, realising, experimenting and problem-solving.
Art and Design is studied by all pupils in Years 7 to 8, with the GCSE syllabus starting in Year 9. Key skills and creativity are the main competencies taught; pupils are encouraged to experiment with arrange of media, techniques and expand their skills, knowledge and understanding. Art is also all about being creative and learning how to express and develop as a confident and independent individual.
A different project and artistic genre is studied each term at Key Stage Three. Pupils will be asked to research and analyse Expressionism, Surrealism, Nature, Cubism, Oriental Art including Manga, Portraiture, and Street Art, so they are able to develop an appreciation of the work of artists, designers and craft workers from a range of cultural backgrounds.
