Children enter K1 (Year 1) in the September before their 6th birthday. It is a wonderful age group where really effective learning is about opening minds and encouraging the sharing of ideas, which in itself develops communication skills and the ability to work as a team. There is a smooth transition from the Early Years Foundation Stage to the Year 1 national curriculum.
Year 1 onwards is about exciting, stimulating and fun opportunities coupled with sound basic learning in the crucial reading, writing and maths areas.
You will find that we take great care to balance informality and structure with creativity and sensitivity. We cover all the bases ensuring the basic skills are there to enable a pupil to progress and achieve to the best of their individual ability. We keep our class sizes small to ensure every child is nurtured and supported.
In K1 the children learn in a stimulating, secure and happy environment. It is a place where your child can learn in a way that is meaningful to them. They are taught through various meaningful topics.
In Maths and English we follow the national curriculum and also promote reading and writing skills by following the Read, Write Inc. scheme.
The learning experiences in K1 are enhanced by various visits and activity days throughout the year. There are many extra-curricular activities for the children can take part in such as DT club, Art club, Science club, Yummy Scrummy Club, Football and Ballet and Tap.
Teaching staff in K1 aim for the children to become independent learners. Formative assessment is used and the children have personalised targets to involve them in the learning process and help them understand the steps required to improve.
Above all, we want our children to come into school every morning with smiles on their faces and be reluctant to leave at the end of the day.
