Our Year one students are building on their language skills by learning how to blend sounds and pronounce words – with the help of a very friendly frog!

Phonics is a key part of the curriculum for the classmates and Head of Kindergarten and form tutor, Mrs Victoria Grant, is joined by Fred the frog during the regular interactive sessions.

The five to six-year-old children are moving on from just saying individual sounds of each letter to being able to recognise and blend words containing diagraphs.

Mrs Grant said:  “Together, we practice sounding-out and writing words in a relaxed environment, which makes learning more fun.

“I am always impressed by the cohort’s grasp of phonics as the year progresses.  Their guided and independent reading skills become stronger and written and verbal communication improves.
