Wellington was named overall winner on Senior sports day yesterday – with two House members taking the coveted titles of school’s top athletes.

The greens pipped last year’s champs, Beatty, to the post by seven points. Wellington celebrations continued when Y10 students Cicely B. and Sanjeet S. were awarded Senior Victrix Ludorum and Victor Lodurum, an honour bestowed for the school’s best performers on the day, respectively.

In an impressive show of athleticism and determination, the 15-year-old classmates dominated many races and their very-well deserved win was the result of the quantity and quality of events they took part in.

Head of PE, Mrs Julia Gunnill, who retires this summer after 26 years at Gad’s, said: “Today is special as it is my last sports day as a teacher at Gad’s.

“As always, the students have displayed a healthy competitive disposition but what has impressed me most is their team spirit. Gad’s students support and encourage one another, be it by running alongside teammates when the burn of long distance kicks in or older Seniors giving nervous Shells a pre-race pep talk.”

A new trophy for 2019 is the “Julia Gunnill Hero of the Day”, which celebrates sportsmanship, strength of character and effort on sports day. Year seven student Freya H., also of Wellington, was the first ever Gad’s Hill Senior to receive the award.

Combined scores for all track and field events gave the overall results:

Wellington          282

Beatty                   275

Haig                      231
