Gad’s students, and staff, took to the stage to perform a variety of musical recitals at a celebration concert last night.

The school’s Spring Music Festival showcases musicians who have been voted finalists in previous open contest, where pupils are encouraged to take part, regardless of their experience or skill.

The top twelve Juniors and Seniors go on to put on a show which sees them play instruments including drums, clarinet, guitar, piano and marimba, with many choosing a vocal recital.

Guest of honour was musician and teacher Sarah Jenkins, who had the unenviable job of adjudicating and awarding the 2019 Junior and Senior winners.

Ms Jenkins, who has performed with internationally-acclaimed composer and post-minimalist pianist Graham Fitkin, announced 11-year-old Sophie F as triumphant for her exceptional rendition of ‘The Flight of the Bumble Bee’ on marimba and Isabelle B, 13, Senior winner after a complex ‘Partitia’ piece, also on marimba.

Both victors were commended for their expression, control and ‘mesmerising’ technique, before being presented with the coveted Junior and Senior Spring Music Festival shields respectively.

Former Gravesham Young Musician of the Year, Ms Jenkins, congratulated all the performers and gave a special mention to Y11 singer Eve S-B on her ‘angelic’ voice and Y7 drummer Toby F for his ‘crowd-pleasing’ delivery of Queen’s rock anthem ‘Under Pressure.’

Director of Music, Mr John Stone, and Headmaster Mr Paul Savage, took the opportunity to present this year’s BTEC students with certificates, on successful completion of a three-year course, and praised them for their ‘hard work and dedication’ and for being ‘such good role models for younger pupils.”

In between individual performances, the crowd was treated to sets from the school’s very own staff band as well as challenging repertoires from the Gad’s marimba ensembles.

In keeping with the ‘Gad’s Family’, theme of the evening, Director of Studies and Head of Geography, Dr. Stephanie Burke, and grade 8 flautist, impressed students with her polished execution of ‘Sonata in F’ by Telemann.
