Cadets from Gad’s Hill School served as Guards of Honour at a memorial service for Gravesham Borough Council’s friend and benefactor, Colonel Charles George Gordon.
The 12-strong group was honoured to be invited to the remembrance ceremony in Gordon Memorial Garden, which concluded with a blessing and inspection by the Mayor of Gravesham, Cllr Harold Craske.
Gad’s Combined Cadet Force Contingent Commander, Major Mark Lamb, said: “It is a privilege to celebrate the life of a man who supported education for all and public welfare in our community.
Gordon lived in a time when only the rich or privileged received a formal education and gave away about 90% of his annual income of £3,000 to charity.
Major Lamb continued: “Many take their right to a good education for granted and to remember a pioneer like Colonel Gordon is a lesson for us all.”
