All Gad’s Houses took home winning titles on sports days this year, with records broken on track and field and not a drop of rain sight!
Beatty Seniors were victorious for the sixth consecutive year while the Haig House contingent took the Junior title with Wellington named overall winner of the Kindergarten event.
Not only did Beatty win as a team, Year 10 House members Sophie H.G. and Joseph F. were awarded Victrix Ludorum and Victor Ludorum respectively – an honour bestowed for the top Senior athletes.
Head of PE Mrs Gunnill said: “Sport celebrates strength and achievement and while we consider ourselves a ‘family’ at Gad’s, healthy competition and determination are what our sports days, particularly for Seniors, are all about.
“The winners of our most prestigious and coveted awards continue to show dedication and team spirit, while pushing themselves to realise personal success.”
Meanwhile, the Junior competitors were hot on the heels of their older counterparts taking part in sprints, relays, obstacle courses and field events including the rounders ball throw, where two girls smashed previous records, both set in 2015 – Grace W., of Y6, threw an impressive 27.65m, beating the previous U10 record by just over 8m; Y4’s Naomi N.C. recorded a record-breaking 16.5m distance, also beating the previous U8 record of 13.96m.
The youngest Gad’s athletes also took part in races but their day was much more about agility and taking part, with every student from Nursey to Year 2 given the opportunity to take part. As well as teachers and the PE team, Senior volunteers were on-hand to make sure everyone stayed safe and had fun.
The crowds at all three afternoon events were entertained by the Gad’s cheerleading Junior cheerleading squad, who performed upbeat routines after being coached by Junior teacher Mrs Titler at an after-school club last term.
After the traditional tug-of-war and parents’ races, Mrs Gunnill thanked Headmaster Mr Craggs for hosting his last sports days before his retirement at the end of this academic year.
