Three Gad’s fencers have qualified for the British Youth Championship Finals after a series of demanding battles secured their places.

Read Fencing Coach Miss Ellis’s match report:

Myself and five Gad’s students attended the South East Regional Sabre Championships at Tonbridge School, a very important championships qualifier.

Our contestants ranged from age 10 to 16 and each competed in a poule event, followed by a direct elimination battle. This was a very strong competition and the children had to give everything they had to achieve qualification.

Remove’s Ollie Lloyd and James-Henry Sherburn, of U5G were first up and after both having very successful poule matches were ranked in the top four going onto the direct elimination.

James-Henry narrowly lost in the semi-final to secure bronze while Ollie went one further to secure the silver medal – both achieved qualification for the British Youth Championships.

L4G’s Holly Taylor was next and apart from dropping one match in her poule, secured second ranking. She easily beat everyone to get into the final and narrowly lost 10-8 to finish in second place, also gaining her championship qualifier.

Carter Gagg, of L4S and L4G’s Eden Morgan also attended the competition and even though their legs were exhausted from the ski trip the previous week both did brilliantly!

In a 22 strong competition, Carter achieved 7th place and Eden earned 11th – a brilliant effort from both boys in a very tough age group.

The British Youth Championship Finals BYC’s will be taking place in Sheffield during the first May Bank Holiday.
