Seniors students from Gad’s Hill performed ‘Bugsy Malone’ in the school theatre – with cameo appearances from their teachers!
The 50-strong cast’s interpretation of the gangster comedy film showcased the children’s acting, singing and dancing talents, ably accompanied by the independent school’s teaching staff, and Headmaster!
Amid the impressive scenes, featuring Year 10 student Adam Ephraim as ‘Fat Sam’, with his flawless American accent, and Year 11 GCSE student Charlotte Moore, aka ‘Blousey Brown’, and her ‘West End’ tap routine, Headmaster Mr David Craggs could be spotted sweeping the floor!
Adam said: “Playing a lead role takes discipline and focus – it has been a challenge but seeing how proud my teachers and family were on the night made all the hard work worthwhile.”
He was joined by Head of English, Mr Paul Wadey, displaying an unknown flair for ballroom dance and Science teacher, Mr Gibson being ‘splurged’ by his very own form!
While the show celebrated the students, another highlight was from the ‘Gad’s Flappers’, a group of teachers who performed a sultry routine in the Speak Easy.
Bugsy is the first production for new Drama teacher Mrs Chenaie Roberts: “I am thrilled that the hours of rehearsals and dedication and hard work from the performers has resulted in such a fantastic show.
“Gad’s has a wonderful creative community, nurtured by staff and parents and I was heartened to see so many students, local people and friends of the school supporting us in the audience.
“I have been overwhelmed by how many students, including many Juniors, have asked when they can audition for next year’s show! It’s testament to the fact that our actors gave a stellar performance and thoroughy enjoyed the experience.”
All Year seven pupils were given a part in the Chorus to help introduce them to singing and dancing and provide experience of a theatrical production – something the school prides itself on with previous musicals including ‘Sweeney Todd’ and ‘Grease’.
Every school production is supported by the Musical Director, the Gad’s Rock Band, and drama and events teams and the Juniors are now looking forward to appearing in ‘Cinderella’ just after Easter.
