Gad’s Hill has been awarded top marks for its catering following a food hygiene inspection – and has also launched a new food technology club.

The school was tested according to national food safety regulations for cleanliness and management and rated ‘excellent’ for its practices, procedures and general conditions.

A team of seven caters for the school’s 3-16 year-old students and provides a choice of healthy home-cooked hot meals such as steak pie, sausage plait and roast dinners every day.

A salad bar and gluten-free and vegetarian alternatives are also provided, as is a selection of fresh fruit and tempting tuck.

As well as being served delicious food, Gad’s students now have the opportunity to make it, during lessons, and at a cookery and food science club.

Juniors and Seniors are benefiting from the school’s refurbished Food Technology classroom, where they have been learning about nutrition and the functional properties of food, as well as getting the chance to prepare, and sample, a variety of dishes.

Head of Design Technology Mrs Masters said:  “The club allows our children to explore the relationship between food and healthy eating, while getting hands-on experience.

“Students as young as nine have enjoyed making savoury and fruit salads and have received rave reviews from parents and friends when they take them home for tea.”
