Royal Engineers and Gad’s cadets hit the right notes to raise £4k for nations Heroes
Fundraising Gad’s cadets and the Band of the Royal Engineers have hit the right notes after raising more than £4,000 for a charity supporting injured men and women in the armed forces.
As proud wearers of the Royal Engineers cap badge, Bandmaster Warrant Officer First Class Matthew Speight invited the school’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF) to help out at a special night of musical entertainment for Help the Heroes at the Brooke Theatre, Chatham, earlier this month.
On the night of the concert, Gads’ cadets played escort to a number of local dignitaries – including local broadcaster Geoff Clark - and guests, encouraging those attending to participate in a charity raffle and to buy merchandise from Help for Heroes.
The concert itself - organised and performed by the Royal Engineers - was rousing and raised the theatre’s roof, spurring the audience to once again dig deep into their pockets to support wounded British soldiers.
Among those representing the school were: Corporal Charlotte Lewell, Corporal Hayley Russell, Corporal Harry Pattison, Corporal Harry Howell, Corporal Kieran Lamb, Cadet Abbie Turner and Cadet Abbie Tutt, accompanied by Second Lieutenant and CCF Instructor, Mark Lamb.
Mark Lamb said: “We were delighted to be invited to be part of this special evening. Our cadets feel very strongly about, and are inspired by the work of the armed forces, which is why they felt compelled to donate their own spare time to help out.
“To be able to help raise such a fantastic sum of money, for such a worthy cause, is of great privilege to us all.”
Bandmaster Warrant Officer First Class Matthew Speight said: “We were incredibly grateful for the support from the Gad’s cadets.
“We have a fantastic working relationship with the school’s Combined Cadet Force which sees us working together to develop pupils through dynamic, military themed, community based activities. And help from the school’s cadets on nights like this only validate the fact that together we are helping to grow good citizens, who do their best to assist those in need.
“We are very much looking forward working with the school when the CCF launch their own band in January.”
