Year 1

Year 1

Children enter K1 (Year 1) in the September before their 6th birthday.  It is a wonderful age group where really effective learning is about opening minds and encouraging the sharing of ideas, which in itself develops communication skills and the ability to work as a team.

Year 1 onwards is about exciting, stimulating fun and opportunities coupled with sound basic learning in the crucial reading, writing and maths areas. You will find that we take great care to balance informality and structure with creativity and sensitivity. We cover all the bases ensuring the basic skills are there to enable a pupil to go on to develop and achieve to the best of their individual ability. We keep our class sizes small to ensure every child is nurtured and supported.

In K1 the children learn in a stimulating, secure and happy environment. It is a place where your child can learn in a way that is meaningful to them. They are taught through various topics including Ourselves, Celebrations and Toys. In Numeracy we follow the Abacus scheme and in Literacy reading and writing skills are improved upon by following the Read, Write Inc. scheme. The learning experiences in K1 are enhanced by various visits and activity days throughout the year. There are also many after-school activities for the children to partake in such as ICT club, Art club, Music club and various Sports clubs.

Children learn about the following throughout the year

Autumn

Science – ourselves

Topic where we live/celebrations

Spring

Science – sorting and using materials

Summer

Science – growing plants and animal

Teaching staff in K1 aim for the children to become more independent and to become more aware and responsible for their own progress. Formative assessment is used and the children have personalised targets to involve them in the learning process and help them understand the steps needed to improve.
