Workshop sets the stage for little stars learning
Kindergarten children from Gad’s experienced a more dramatic way of learning class topics through the mediums of song, dance and acting when they took part in a theatre workshop at the school!
As senior and junior school pupils prepare to perform ‘Oliver!’ as part of the Charles Dickens Bicentenary celebrations at the Woodville Halls in February, about 70 youngsters from the Kindergarten welcomed The Freshwater Theatre Company to their classrooms for a creative teaching session.
As part of their lesson, the Reception children were took on a magical discovery of ‘Colour’. Equipped with a ‘Hunters Kit’, the children used all of their senses to investigate ‘colour’ by exploring their classroom, collecting clues, singing and using musical instruments along the way and creating a delightful story about their topic.
Meanwhile K1 (Year 1) were taken on a mystery tour of ‘The Magical Toy Museum’. They were told to picture that all visitors had gone home and had to use their bodies, voices and imaginations as they brought to life a range of toys, both old and new, including china dolls, threadbare teddy bears and clockwork robots.
‘The Great Fire of London’ was studied by K2’s (Year 2) in their workshop, as they recreated scenes of everyday life in Pudding Lane, the fire itself, the frantic escape, camping at Moorfields and making decisions about how to rebuild the city. They learnt about King Charles II, Samuel Pepys and the Lord Mayor of London along the way.
Organiser of the visit and K2’s Teacher, Mr Mike Patey said: “It was a fantastic day and complimented work in class very well. The children responded excellently throughout the workshops - they loved being in character and found it very exciting. The staff were also very impressed as they saw the pupils growing in confidence and using their imaginations.”
