Gad’s Hill youngsters chick it out!

Title Bar Spring was clearly in full swing at Gad’s as pupils celebrated the hatching of two chicks.

Kindergarten pupil Ella Marshall (pictured), aged three, was delighted to meet one day old Pekin Bantam chicks Sage (right) and Paxo (left) at the School based at the former home of Charles Dickens.

The new additions, brought in by teacher Charlotte Basset who breeds the feathered friends, formed part of a special lesson teaching the children about new life and spring.

Fiona McPherson, Head of Gad’s Hill Kindergarten and Junior Schools, said: “It was fantastic for the children to watch the chicks and we were able to teach them to be respectful of these delicate young creatures.

“Traditional schooling methods, such as books, can teach children a lot of things but we thought this was a better way to demonstrate new life and beginnings as spring and Easter kick in.”

England’s top performing independent School will soon see its year 6 pupils hatching their own chicks in incubators as part of a hands on science project.
