KINDERGARTEN AND JUNIOR school pupils have collected a bumper crop of food donations for charity as part of their harvest festival .

There were so many tins of food that children at Gad’s Hill School used wheel barrows to carry it all!

Each child – aged from three years old to eleven - brought in items from home, including tinned, powdered and dried food, tea, coffee, fruit juice and vegetables. The collection amounted to a staggering 2500 items!

Youngsters took the food to Royal Dockyard Church, The Historic Dockyard, Chatham as part of the school’s annual Harvest Festival and after treating the audience attending the special event to a series of musical performances, donated the crop to the Gravesend arm of The Salvation Army.

The charity will use the items to help stock up their ‘Foodbank’ which sees volunteers providing essential food items to families who have suffered in some way, as well as, elderly who are less fortunate and the homeless.

Mr Richard Arnold, who is based at the Salvation Army, Grove Road, Gravesend was delighted to receive the food boost on behalf of the charity.

He said: "We would like to say a big thank-you to all the children and parents at Gad’s Hill School whose food will go to helping people in crisis."

Mr David Craggs, headmaster of Gad’s Hill School, said: “We try to encourage lots of charity work at the school and last year we raised thousands of pounds for the school’s three chosen charities: The British Heart Foundation, Help for Heroes and The Kent Air Ambulance.

“This year we have got The Salvation Army involved to support our harvest festival. I was staggered by the amount of food our children’s families brought in. While many of our families are much more fortunate than others, these are still tough times, and it’s marvelous to see so many putting hands in their pockets and making sure that those that need help benefit from the charity.”

In addition to the presentation, the schools three houses (Beatty, Haig and Wellington) we’re surprised by a new announcement! After the current three Heads of House - Andy Papa-Adams for Beatty, Chloe Earl, Haig and Harriet Tubb, Wellington - were presented with House Ties - similar to their counterparts in the Senior School -they were told that they were to be joined by three new Deputy Heads of House.

Mia Wallace was appointed Deputy for Beatty, Jemima Bischoff for Haig and an ecstatic Thomas Burling for Wellington!

The celebration continued as the each house eagerly awaited the results of the harvest festival collection competition and presentation of the Harvest Shield.  The results were as follows:

Beatty: 481 items

Haig: 827 items

Wellington: 1,160 items

Shortly afterwards, Harriet Tubb and her newly appointed Deputy, Thomas Spurling collected the House Harvest Festival Shield on behalf of Wellington from Richard Arnold and The Headmaster.
